NOW HIRING: Planning Intern
The Mid-Iowa Planning Alliance for Community Development (MIPA) seeks to hire an Intern for summer 2026. An hourly, part-time position, the Intern will work under the general direction of the MIPA’s Executive Director to perform a variety of professional planning assignments. Duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Support the activities of the Iowa Clean Cities Coalition (ICCC)
- Work with the Iowa Clean Cities Coalition Director to:
- Become familiar with the Clean Cities and Communities program through the United States Department of Energy
- Collaborate closely with and support the ICCC stakeholders
- Conduct stakeholder interviews and surveys
- Analyze alternative energy reports and programs
- Engage with new groups not familiar with the ICCC
- Work with the Iowa Clean Cities Coalition Director to:
- Work with the Central Iowa Regional Transportation Planning Alliance on updating the FY 2023-2027 Passenger Transportation Plan
- All other job duties as assigned by the Executive Director
Compensation and Benefits
The Intern will be paid at a rate of $19.00 per hour.
Intern applicants should:
- Have completed at least one year of course work, pursuing a degree in urban, community and/or regional planning or a related field. Ideally, candidates will have an emphasis in transportation planning, community development planning, environmental planning, sustainability, and/or geographic information system (GIS);
- Have word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software knowledge;
- Have an interest, and preferably experience, with geographic information system (GIS);
- Have a valid driver’s license;
- Be prepared to accomplish his/her work at MIPA’s office located in West Des Moines, IA;
- Expect to be working with computer applications for most of the workday;
- Have the ability to work both independently and as a productive and contributory member of the MIPA team;
The Organization
MIPA is a regional planning entity comprised of local communities and community development stakeholders in the central Iowa region. MIPA provides a regional forum to ensure coordination between the public and local, state, and federal agencies regarding planning issues, and to prepare related plans and programs.
